Beschreibung:
Der in Mexiko beheimatete Kaugummibaum Manilkara zapota wird bis zu 30 Meter groß und kommt vor allem in Yucatan, aber auch in den Bundesstaaten Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Quintana Roo, Colima und Michoacán vor. Die Art bevorzugt feucht-heißes Klima. Aus dem Milchsaft der angeritzten Pflanze wurde bei den Mayas und auch heute noch Kaugummi gewonnen. Hierzu wird der Latex gekocht und eingedickt und in kleine Barren geformt.
